Blanc Industrie

Blanc Industrie

Blanc Industrie is a system of illuminated display stands with inflatable shapes floating above them, devised by French designers Mathieu Bassée and Christophe Dubois for an exhibition at Paris art/science centre Le Laboratoir in which objects were displayed backlit from beneath on seven plinths that also doubled as storage crates.

In terms of lighting, each module integrates a light box and serves as the only light source of the exhibition. Filled with helium, the custom shaped tethered balloons act both as reflectors and diffusers, reflecting light back on to the objects (without them, there would be a backlighting effect) and at the same time, diffusing an ambient light into the space.

Using this kind of lighting was a way to introduce light as a tool of observation and recreate a sort of nomadic and temporary underground, laboratory.  The name of the system, ‘Blanc Industrie’ refers to the neutral and standardized light used in industrial facilities.
