Linden Agave surfbaord

The Linden Agave singlefin surfboard is a sustainable surfboard, crafted by veteran shaper Gary Linden from dead agave foraged from the SoCal desert.

Agave is a light, extremely durable material with sufficient flex to make it a viable alternative to both the traditional heavy wooden boards of the past and the environmentally toxic materials used in most modern surfboards.

However, this commitment to a better environment doesn’t come cheap — it takes Linden over 60 hours to shape each board and costs in the region of $2,500-$5,000, making this a surfboard you are going to want to take care of.

Given that surfing’s future is heavily dependent on the health of our planet, this step towards finding more sustainable methods in surfboard manufacture should be welcome to surfers, despite the hefty price tag.

Novell Tullett website

I have just finished work on a new website for landscape architects, Novell Tullett.

It is a simple one page site with content presented in a neat arrangement of nested accordions and flash driven image galleries.

Funghi

Some great items to be found over at Hayon Studio, the home of Spanish artist and industrial designer Jaime Hayon.

The Funghi lamps shown here are inspired by forest life in general and mushrooms in particular — conceived in earthy colors and made of ceramic to recreate subtle forest light and texture.

Fractal

Loving this - a 28-inch plywood cube, with multiple drawers on all sides. Made by Takeshi Miyakawa who was born in Tokyo but now lives and works in New York.

Fractal - open

It could be used as storage but Miyakawa has priced it as sculpture, at $20,000. “It was such a pain in the neck to make,” he said. “I don’t want to really make too many of them.”

I guess we won’t be seeing this in IKEA then.

Ott & Stein Grafikdesign

I love the way the designers of this poster have used the lines of the Marianne Brandt tea infuser to define the grid structure on which the typography hangs.

Check out the retrospective on graphic designers Nicolaus Ott and Bernard Stein at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin until June 15th. If you can’t make it, then take a peek at some of the exhibits here.

Nendo Hanabi light

The heat of the bulb makes this shape-memory alloy lamp from Japanese design group, Nendo, “bloom” whenever the light is turned on. “Hanabi”, the Japanese word for “fireworks”, literally means “flower + fire.”
