I am just back from a holiday break in St Ives, Cornwall - a regular haunt for me since childhood and pretty much my second home. We usually stay in No 5, Barnaloft which my aunt has owned since the apartment block’s construction in the early 1960’s.

I have been enjoying spending some time looking through the diverse media explorations of Burak Arikan.
Pictured above is one from a series entitled ARB that visualizes the growth of a dynamic network as nodes and connections are added and removed. Where nodes push and pull each other, strong forces create bright colors and weak forces create dark colors.

99 Fears is a collection of 99 pen and ink drawings by Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov, in which he describes a range of personal worries and a few of the more general anxieties that characterise modern existence.
In the above example he pairs an illustration of the balloon and the cactus with a sentence that describes how they work together to maintain their fragile relationship.
“Fear #37: A balloon and a cactus became friends. For the time being – everything OK. The cactus’ pricks are minding the tender balloon, and the balloon keeps itself close to the ground for a better chat with the cactus (even though the balloon can easily go 56 metres high).”
Speaking for myself, I’ve been there and know what they are going through…!
99 Fears is published by Phaidon or you can see all 99 Fears at the exhibition that runs from September 2008 at the Bonn Kunstmuseum.

Regular readers of this blog will probably know by now that I am a bit of a Dieter Rams groupie, so please forgive me for coming over a bit stalker-like and posting this production still of Rams taken in his home office whilst being interviewed for the much awaited movie for industrial design geeks, Objectified.
And if you are wondering what’s on Rams’ timelessly beautiful, wall mounted, TG60 reel to reel tape recorder, that he designed for Braun way back in 1962… Well it’s “Miles Davis, circa 1957, of course!”
Take a closer look at this exotic looking sea creature and you will see that it is made up entirely of pencils. It is the work of Jennifer Maestre and more examples of spikey flora and fauna can be found on her site.

An amusing collection of faces found in everyday objects here in Bluebin’s Flickr set - Finding Faces.

Thirty-six pneumatic muscles control this wearable motorcycle, taking commands from the rider’s body movements.
Jake Loniak’s exoskeleton motorcycle concept, Deus Ex Machina, was devised as part of the transportation program at the Art Center College of Design, which in the past has produced legendary car designers, including BMW chief of design Chris Bangle. Whether or not anything like this audacious concept ever gets into production, however, remains to be seen.
