Using an algorithm developed for the WIRED Anniversary visualisation, IBM Visual Communication Lab research scientists, Fernanda ViƩgas and Martin Wattenberg, developed software to calculate the relative proportions of different colors seen in photos taken in each month of the year, and plotted them on a wheel, with summer at the top and time proceeding clockwise, to produce this beautiful visualisation, which they call Flickr Flow.
The diagram picks up the ebb and flow of seasonal colors with close-ups below showing winter, spring, summer, and fall.
