Maths Dreamed Universe poster

“‘Maths Dreamed Universe’ is a quantitative visualisation of the manner in which elemental forms in nature order themselves. The graph – created using generative Python code – maps numbers 0 to 100,001 arranged in a logarithmic spiral. The pattern that results is frequently found in nature, as in the arrangement of floral organs and the formation of galaxies. The spiral reveals the visual relationships of elemental numbers and the aesthetic beauty of mathematical equations.

The project reflects the contemporary interest in the intersection of science and art : in particular the crossover of pure math with graphic aestheticism. The appreciation of aesthetic forms has a long tradition in art and design, but ornamentation is often derided as being little more than a fancy. But what if aesthetic appreciation was functional? – what if beauty communicates and is thus open to analytical investigation? ‘Maths Dreamed Universe’ is the first in a series of projects that investigates meaning in aesthetics.”

WIRE - David Sylvian

I have never been a huge fan of David Sylvian but I do like this cover layout for The Wire, featuring a nicely crafted shot by photographer Donald Milne.

It makes the moody one look like some kind of wise old modernist wizard!

COMA business card

COMA business card

Aen Tan has been in touch to tell me about the beautifully understated new letterpress business cards he has produced for his design agency, COMA.

“The COMA identity is designed to reflect our philosophy of simplicity and attention to details. Information on the single-sided business card follows a utilitarian, no-frills typographic format, isolated via whitespace. The text and logo was impressed using the letterpress printing method by Dolce Press into their in-house heavy cotton paper stock. Letterpress is an old printing method invented in the mid-15th century, making for an interesting contrast with the modern design.”

Buddha grid

According to John Dilworth, Tibetan Buddhists have for thousands of years maintained consistency in their religious iconography through the use of geometric grids, providing a structural framework on which various artists can create these sacred images. The traditional artist would first create the grid, then begin the drawing, working within the constraints of the grid.

So you see, Grasshopper, the grid is indeed the path to layout nirvana!
