Melbourne based Ess.Laboratory (Experiment Surreal Style), are Hoshika Oshimi and Tatsuyoshi Kawabata, a design duo from Japan who are interested in the tension between courture and surrealism, the artificial and the real, disfigurement and embellishment, body and air, light and shadow, creating clothing that stems from individuality and conceptual ideas.
They have an obvious desire to defy any commercialisation of their work. Surrealistic ideas are translated into unorthodox shapes, unexpected cuts and forms, and yet Ess.Laboratory’s clothes remain wearable and timeless. To them, fashion is not seen as something that is superficial but a search for the essence of it, involving both research in the fabric as well as the investigation of the idea of clothing itself.
