Pico is a tile collection conceived by French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Italian ceramics company Mutina. Composed of compressed sand and mixed minerals, the series maintains the rawness of handmade cement and traditional earth floors, letting the materials convey their natural characteristics.
Starting with neutral base shades of white, grey, and sand, the matte surfaces have depth from an irregular pattern of either inverted or elevated dots. Tones of red and blue can be applied as little dots in the hollows to make the tiles colder or warmer in tone. Also contrasting dotted relief tiles on vertical surfaces with indented dots on horizontal surfaces, or vice versa, can lead to interesting effects.
