I’m a big Barbara Hepworth fan so I am desperate to visit the new Chipperfield designed Hepworth Wakefield, both for the works inside and the architecture of the building.
The identity devised by APFEL is not too shabby either, though it has drawn a certain amount of controversy, with suggestions that maybe the job should have been given to a local Yorkshire agency, comparisons with the Hayward Gallery’s branding and complaints that the new bespoke typeface (Hepworth Regular) should be more rounded, with organic letter forms to better reflect Hepworth’s signature use of oval motifs and natural forms.
Personally I think these criticisms are unfair. I can think of nothing worse than some awful blobby pastiche of Hepworth’s work and I don’t subscribe to the somewhat parochial view that geographical location should be ranked particularly highly in the commissioning process. Surely work should be offered primarily on the merit of a studio’s output and demonstrable ability, not their locality.
