Marc Newson surfboard

Machined from ten kilograms of hollow nickel, Marc Newson’s surfboard started off as a custom-made tool for big-wave surfer Garrett McNamara. He was looking for a new kind of heavy and sturdy board which would resist the force of powerful waves almost impossible to catch with normal fibreglass boards.

Newson got together with veteran shaper, Dick Brewer, to experiment with new materials in surfing using the process of electroforming. The result is this highly polished surfboard, with three razor sharp fins, made of a metal usually used for helicopter rotor blades.

Apparently, during a wipe-out, McNamara lost his $100,000 board and discovered it the next day in the hands of someone 15 miles down the beach. That board is now on display at the Gagosian Gallery in New York.

Only a total of ten boards exist with one selling recently at a Sotheby’s auction in NYC for $200,000.
